This page provides information about the INSIGHTS program, including information about how the program works and your choices about use of your information in the program.
What is the INSIGHTS Program?
INSIGHTS is a program provided by MetroPCS and our affiliates (like T-Mobile) to other businesses (our Insights partners) to develop consumer research reports.
The program works this way—we enter into contracts with Insights Partners to provide them with de-identified customer data, which means information about how customers use their mobile devices (including web browsing, apps and feature usage), general location information, certain information about T-Mobile and MetroPCS product and service usage (such as device type and amount of use), demographic and additional information we obtain from others. We provide the information in a format that does not personally identify our customers. We do not provide the Personal Information of our customers.
The Insights partner aggregates the data, which means they combine the data for a large group of users to show the total number of users. This data may be from MetroPCS, T-Mobile and other sources. They use this data to develop consumer research reports that show trends for specific population groups, and market the reports to groups that can use the information in their businesses. For example, city traffic planners have a need to understand traffic patterns. Under the INSIGHTS Program, we may provide cell tower location data to an Insights partner showing the number of commuters on different highways to create a report for city traffic planners.
Customers Have a Choice.
Customers have a choice about whether their de-identified information is included in these reports. You are free to opt out of this program at any time. If you opt out of this program, we no longer will provide the data described above to our INSIGHTS partners. Go here to view your choices.
What Information Is Used for the Program?
The INSIGHTS program relies on de-identified and aggregated customer information such as customers’ general location and mobile online usage. MetroPCS does not share a customer’s Personal Information – such as name or address – as part of the INSIGHTS program. Instead, we de-identify the information before it is provided to our Insights partners and link it to an identifier (e.g., XlPnjZLJj9X8bA) that does not indicate who the user is. The information linked with this identifier may include a customer’s general location based on the cell tower their phone is near (but not a precise location), summary information about how they use their phone, along with some demographic data.
How is the information used?
We securely send this de-identified information to our INSIGHTS partners who aggregate a single customer’s information with that of thousands of others to produce consumer research reports. Our Insights partners are contractually prohibited from trying to use this data to identify any particular person, or from sharing anything but aggregate information.
What do the reports show?
A report from an Insights partner contains only aggregate information for a group of customers. For instance, a report may display a map that indicates the total number of visitors to a shopping center at different times of day. The map is based on aggregated mobility patterns and aggregated browsing history. Retailers can learn about interests and shopping preferences for specific groups, and position their merchandise in appropriate ways to fulfill customers’ needs. Another example is a report that would show congestion points on specific bus routes on weekdays, based on the aggregated data of a group of customers that ride the bus to work on the route every weekday, which could be used to develop new or alternate bus transit routes.
