MetroPCS Community Scholars Program
Print the Application
MetroPCS founded the Community Scholars Program to recognize senior high school students’ community involvement and to encourage their continued dedication to volunteer activities. The program provides college scholarships to high school seniors who value volunteerism, have made a difference in their hometowns and excel academically. Education, volunteerism and community involvement are all part of MetroPCS’ corporate foundation.
MetroPCS and Kyocera Communications, Inc., a leading global manufacturer of wireless phones and devices, are awarding $2,500 scholarships to high school seniors who plan to continue education in college or university programs. In evaluating applications, our overarching criteria will be students who have demonstrated exceptional involvement in volunteerism and community service, in addition to academics and other criteria. Scholarships are offered for a full-time study at an accredited two or four year institution of the student’s choice.
In addition, we will be awarding a $25,000 national scholarship to one lucky winner. All winners of the $2,500 scholarships will be eligible to receive the MetroPCS national scholarship.
The scholarship program is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a national nonprofit educational support organization that seeks to involve the private sector in expanding educational opportunities and encouraging educational achievement. The following will be taken into account when selecting winners:
- Community service and involvement
- Participation in school activities
- Academic record (applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a standard 4.0 grading scale to be considered)
- Additional Honors
- Work experience
- Statement of goals and aspirations
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
- An outside appraisal via a letter of recommendation
Finalists will be notified by mail by January 29, 2010. Due to the number of applications received, MetroPCS will only be able to notify students who are named as finalists. Award recipients will be notified in the spring.
Award recipients will be notified by mail by March 26, 2010. If selected as a recipient, 83 students will each receive a $2,500 scholarship award. The $25,000 grand prize scholarship award winner will be selected from the 83 recipient winners. Additionally, each of the 83 winners will receive a Kyocera phone with one year of free service.
Applicants to the MetroPCS Community Scholars Program, sponsored by Kyocera, must be high-school seniors attending a public or private high school in one of the following counties and may not be related to any MetroPCS or Kyocera employee.
